Summary
This development of 35 apartments in the south of Sweden was the result of a design competition held in 1999 by the municipal housing company, AB Landskronahem. A project team was formed in 2003 to take the proposals forward and the scheme was built in 2003-04. The apartments have no heating system and have been designed and built to high levels of energy efficiency
Background
The goals of the project were:
Implementation:
The apartments cost no more than conventional apartments to build. The cost for a standard heating system has been excluded, and this money was used to increase the insulation thickness and window quality. The lack of space heating reduces the operational costs of the apartments by 25%.
The design and layouts of the apartments are quite traditional. All apartments have a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and storage areas; the number of bedrooms varies between one and four, while the sizes of the apartments vary between 70 and 115 m² usable floor area. All the apartments are for rental.
However, the construction techniques are far from traditional - no heating system and record levels of airtightness being just two of the distinguishing features. The house hold appliances and hot water boilers were also chosen for their energy efficiency.
